One of the things we love about Chiropractic is the "side effects."

(And NO, we’re not talking about the 30 second long disclaimer of side effects at the end of a pharmaceutical commercial that sound worse than the disease the drug is supposed to cure.)

The side effects of chiropractic include better posture, decreased pain, improved mobility, increased range of motion, and if that isn’t enough… Chiropractic may also improve digestion, sinus problems, allergies, heartburn, and menstrual pain to name a few.

“Side effects” that occur with chiropractic care can be explained using the Meric chart.

The Meric chart shows how the spinal nerves exiting the spinal cord control each area and organ in the body. The brain controls the body by sending a message down the spinal cord, out the exiting spinal nerves, to an organ or area in the body. The exiting spinal nerves pass through the vertebrae in the spinal column. If there is a vertebrae that is not in correct alignment, pressure could be put on the spinal nerve decreasing the ability of the brain to communicate with that area of the body.

Take for example the spinal nerves that exit in the low back (L1, L2, L3, L4, and L5). These nerves not only go to the low back muscles and joints, but also to the digestive tract, bladder, reproductive organs, and all the way down to your toes.

You can see why we commonly hear patients, who are being treated for low back pain, tell us they’ve noticed improvement with their digestion and/or circulation into their legs.

This same principle can be applied to any area of the spine and the organs associated with the spinal nerves at that level.

What great side effects, right???

Check out the Meric chart yourself. Find your area of pain and see if you are also experiencing any of the related symptoms.
